Ethics: why we must widen the circle of compassion by Tom Harpur

This article from the Toronto Daily Star in 1994 includes an introduction to Dr Richard Maurice Bucke, a Canadian doctor who write "Cosmic Consciousness" in the early 1900's. Bucke was the the first person to summarise the phenomenon of mystical experience in a logical way, assessing the beliefs, attributes of character, ages, and other common factors among individuals known in the west who could reasonably be supposed tohave had "the cosmic sense". His work is important as a forerunner of all recent studies of mystical experience based on biological factors, and also because the combination of a keen intellect and an analytical mind makes a very compelling case for underlying biological causes behind mystical experience. His analysis of the Shakespeare/Bacon debate of the time makes interesting reading, and his grasp of many different schools of thought gives him great credibility. The book is still in print exactly 100 years after the first publication in 1901.
